
Summary of approved legislationThe regular session of the Texas Legislature ended on May 30. During the legislative session, more than 175 bills were introduced that would have made changes relating to Texas property tax laws. Of those bills, only 30 were eventually approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and sent to the Governor for consideration. A summary of new property tax laws and bills still waiting for gubernatorial action is available on the GPD Property Tax website. RECENT CASELAWCarrollton-Farmers Branch ISD v. JPD, Inc. A taxing unit is only entitled to retain interest and penalty on the corrected valuation when the appraised value is changed on the tax roll after a value protest is filed. If the property owner pays interest and penalty based on a higher value than the corrected value, then the property owner is entitled to a refund of the excess tax as well as the excess interest and penalty. PROPERTY TAX TIPGPD creates email bulletin announcement list In a continuing effort to expand our ability to provide relevant and timely information regarding Texas property tax issues, the Geary, Porter & Donovan, P.C. Property Tax Section has created a group list through Google Groups. At this time, it is an announcement only group which will provide email bulletins to subscribers to the list. Bulletins may be issued when GPD believes that there is something regarding Texas property tax that warrants attention. This might include new court opinions, attorney general opinions, new laws, etc. You can subscribe to the group through the box below.
